My Compare and Contrast Paper

Hi everybody!

So this is my last my last mandatory blog post for the class. I might still post some blogs every now and then, but I'm not sure what they'll be about yet. I actually had a lot of fun making this blog, even if it wasn't the most interesting thing on the planet. I really enjoyed this class. This has been my favorite class this semester, but I'm super pumped for SUMMER!!!

So in this final Introduction to Electronic Media blog post, I'm going to tell you about my awesome compare and contrast paper. This was definitely my favorite project of the class. We got to compare and contrast two media sources, media types or the online and offline versions of the same media source, and write a 3-5 page paper on it. Obviously, I chose to compare and contrast The Hunger Games books vs. The Hunger Games movies. I guess that was actually obvious, because at least two other people decided to do that exact same topic. So, I decided, if

everyone is gonna do that then I'm gonna change mine to something that

nobody else is doing. Surprisingly enough nobody was doing a compare and

contrast of Harry Potter. So, I decided fine I'll do mine on Harry Potter then.

Realizing really soon that there was a lot of information, I finally changed my topic to the one I used. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire book vs.

movie, I've always been a pretty big Harry Potter geek, so this was a good topic for me. Surprisingly, although J. K. Rowling helped make the film, there was a lot left out of the media due to it being a huge book. One of the main points, that I really

liked, that they left out in the movie that was in the book, was house elves. In the book, it was a huge deal that Hogwarts was using house elves to cook their meals and weren't paying them. It also shows off the passionate and assertive side of Hermione, but they don't even mention them in the movie. Well, That's all folks!

My Media Research Presentation

In this post, we're going to talk a little bit about my media research project. So, I had to make a 8-10 minute presentation about one aspect of the media that I enjoy. I originally was planning on

doing something about music, because I love music, but there were a lot of people already doing presentations on different aspects of music. So, I decided I would do mine on sports in the media, because I love sports, like just as much as I do music. My media research presentation mainly focused on the evolution of the sports media throughout history. We had to have our presentation complete with a PowerPoint, and a question that the class had to answer about our speech. Mine was, What was the name of the first sports newspaper? A. New York Times, B. Spirit of the Times, C. ESPN, or D. All of the above. Do you know the answer?

My Media Journal

Hey everyone, welcome back!

So, this blog post is going to be about my Media Journal. In case you're wondering what a media journal is, it's an assignment I had to do for my class. For my media journal, I had to record all of my media usage for a week, 7 consecutive days, from reading books, to checking social media, to playing video games, to listening to music. Then, I had to construct a bunch of graphs and charts for my data, including what time of day did I use the most data, what day of the week did I use the most data, and my daily and weekly amount of time on certain forms of media. After I had completed that, I had to write a 3-5 page analysis on my activities and media usage. I learned from this assignment how much media I consume in a week, and it was an insane amount of time. It was 3,959 minutes! Granted, this was counting schoolwork on a computer, music while driving, and music while working. It definitely gave me a new perspective on how much media I use. Also, I accidentally handed in my assignment late, and got points deducted. So, I was pretty angry at myself for that, but I definitely learned a valuable lesson on turning assignments in on time!

My New Media Presentation on the Purdue Owl

Howdy ya'll!

Sorry for the cowboy-like greeting. I don't actually talk like that, but I just thought I'd spice things up. So today I'm not going to do a media review like my last couple posts. My next couple posts are gonna be focused more around what I'm doing in my Introduction to Electronic Media class.

So, this time, I'm going to tell you about my new media presentation. For this presentation, I had to present one aspect of the media that I use, and that I thought would be helpful to the class. It had to be a 3-5 minute explanation and demonstration of the aspect of the media. I think my presentation went really well. I chose the Purdue OWL. The Purdue OWL is a great resource for students everywhere. It is an internet site where you can find out how to cite anything for your bibliography. Also, not only does it tell you how to cite sources, it also allows you to look up sources to help improve your grammar. All in all, the Purdue OWL is a great source to use, especially for students.

My No Smoking advertisement Media Review

Did you know that Children living in smoking homes are 3 times as likely to start smoking than those living in nonsmoking households? The smoking of tobacco started taking off many, many years ago before people knew how bad it was for you. It was celebrity endorsed, it had interesting

advertisements, and it was fun and addicting. Eventually, no smoking ads became more popular recently, do to the knowledge we have gained about what smoking can do to you. I found this Just Like Mommy ad in my speech class and thought that it presented an interesting point. Not only do people smoke to handle stress, or look cool, but people also smoke because they aren't taught otherwise, or they feel like it isn't a big deal because the rest of their family does it. Smoking is actually very bad for you. Not only is it bad for your health, but it also makes people want to be around you less because it makes your clothes, your house, and your car, all smell gross. Smoking is still terrible for your health though, as it is linked to heart disease, strokes, and lung cancer. 480,000 people in the United States die every year from smoking cigarettes. It is up to us to stop this vast amount of death. Discourage the use of cigarettes among your friends, neighbors, and especially family. It's up to you to be the smoke free generation; it's up to you to save a life.

My Media Review of Les Miserables

Hey everybody!!!

In my last article, I talked about a new movie that came out recently called Logan. Today, I'm going to take you back a little bit and tell you about a not as new movie that came out five years ago, Les Miserables. If you have seen Les Miserables and Logan, you might find they have a similarity, Hugh Jackman plays the main character in both. Les Miserables is set in France during the French Revolution, and follows a newly released prisoner on parole, who is soon to be on the run for the rest of the movie. The prisoner instantly goes back to his old ways, but after the kindness of a man, tries to build a respectable life. It was an exceptional movie. Although, those that don't like musicals or songs, may not like it as much because every line in the movie is sung. Not only is everything sung, but one surprising and amazing feature of this movie is that all of the songs are sung live on set. Most movies have the songs done in a studio to help the actors sound better, and then they add the songs into the right scenes as the actors lip sync. Some movies do this really well, while others are pretty obvious *Cough* High School Musical *Cough*. 

              Anyway, the actors in Les Miserables do a really good job of the singing and acting aspect. One actor that could've had a little bit stronger of a voice, was Amanda Seyfried, who played Cosette. The movies cinematography was amazing, and the directing was excellent. The movie can be really depressing because almost all of the main characters die, some in very gruesome ways, like suicide. At the same time, it shows that everyone dies, but that there is still hope. This movie is very powerful. The actors do an exceptional job displaying emotion in their facial expressions and in their songs. I caught myself, multiple times in fact, with my face scrunched up in

sadness because I was really sucked into the story through the actors emotions. This movie really connects well with the audience, and it shows that everyone dies, so live your life the best you can while you still have it. I thought this was an all around great movie. It is really depressing though, and it has a lot of singing in the two and a half hour long movie. I'd give it a 4.6 out of 5. My Media Review of Logan

Hey! Welcome back!

Today, I'm going to tell you about this new movie that came to theaters recently, Logan.Just letting you know, spoilers ahead. I have been waiting for this movie to come out for about a year now. As declared by Hugh Jackman himself, this will be his last Wolverine movie, which is incredibly sad, because he does an excellent job with the role. Logan is a movie based around the life of Marvel's superhero Wolverine as an old man. This movie was one of the best movies I've ever seen! Because he is so old, Wolverine's healing abilities don't work as well as they used to, causing the fight scenes to be more intense than previous films. Also, all past Wolverine movies were rated PG-13, unlike Logan which was rated R. Because it was rated R, the fight scenes were insane! Some of the action scens are drenched in blood as claws rip through flesh and pierce through the back of character's skulls. Not only was the action in this movie incredible, but the story line was phenomenal. From starting out as a sour old man that's just going through the motions, and even contemplating suicide because he can't find a reason to live with his troubled past, to risking, and giving, his life to help a little girl and a small group of children escape from the evil villains.

I also love that throughout the movie, and past movies, Wolverine has always been struggling and fighting himself. Spoiler!!!! In Logan, Wolverine actually fights himself in the end when the main antagonist creates a more powerful clone of Wolverine. Wolverine does not kill the clone though, which is interesting. The girl he is protecting kills the clone. For once, Wolverine can't do it himself, he needs to rely and trust other people to help him. This movie gave me tears of joy, tears of sadness, an adrenaline rush, and an adorable story line. This movie made me feel; it showed me heart and heartbreak. All in all, I thought this was a very exceptional movie! I'd give this movie a 4.9/5. Thanks for reading!

My First Entry

Hey everyone!

My name is Nathan Moxley, and  I have created this blog for my Introduction to Electronic Media college class. I have kinda been looking forward to this because I've actually wanted to start a blog, but I never really knew how, and I've never really had time. So I'm an 18 year old college student. I go to FCC...not the Federal Communications Commission, but Frederick Community College in Maryland. This is my second semester here; I'm taking Statistics, Biology, Speech, and Introduction to Electronic Media. I want to transfer to Towson and get my degree in communications. Also, I eventually want to get a job doing radio broadcasting or public relations.

In my spare time, I like playing ukulele, I love playing, and watching, football, and I love hanging out with my friends...Yes I may be homeschooled, but I do have friends. Probably my favorite thing to do though, is hangout with my girlfriend. It doesn't really matter what we're doing; I always have a blast with her. I have been raised in Maryland my whole life, and I'm a huge Baltimore Ravens fan. I work at Sports N' Hobbies in Frederick Maryland. Another big thing about me, is that I LOVE music! I like a lot of different kinds of music, but some of my favorite artists are Switchfoot, Panic at the Disco, We the Kings, The Fray, The Script, and Jason Mraz. I hope you enjoy my blog!
